Transfer Graduate Credit Policy and Procedures

Overview

Students who have completed graduate coursework at other accredited institutions may be eligible to transfer credits toward their doctoral degree. The transfer credit process ensures that previous coursework aligns with our program requirements and maintains academic standards.

⏰ Important Time Limitation

Transfer credits must be no older than six years at the time of graduation. The six-year period is calculated backward from your anticipated graduation date, not from the date of transfer approval.

Example: Calculating Credit Age Eligibility

If you expect to graduate in four years from now, we must count back six years from that graduation date to determine which courses are eligible for transfer.

Anticipated Graduation Year: 2029

Six-Year Window Begins: 2023

Result: Only courses completed in 2023 or later would be eligible for transfer credit

Transfer Credit Process

Complete the Transfer Credit Form

Obtain and complete the 🔗Transfer Credit Request Form.

Gather Required Documentation

Assemble the following materials to support your transfer credit request:

  • Official course syllabi from the institution where you completed the coursework
  • Official transcripts showing course completion and grades
  • Any additional materials that demonstrate course content and learning outcomes

Faculty Advisor Review and Approval

Submit your completed form and supporting documentation to your faculty advisor. Your advisor will:

  • Review the syllabi for the courses you wish to transfer
  • Evaluate whether the content and rigor are suitable replacements for required program courses
  • Sign the form indicating approval or provide feedback for revision

Submit to Program Coordinator

After receiving your faculty advisor's approval, forward the completed and signed form along with all supporting documentation to the Academic Specialist, Aishah Cowan (acowan@gsu.edu).

Department Chair Final Approval

The Department Chair will obtain the program director's (Dr. Esposito) signature for final approval. You will be notified once the transfer credit request has been processed and approved.
